Thruxton BSB: Hickman turning season around at 'ballsy track'
Smiths Racing BMW's Peter Hickman said it was "ideal" to secure his first podium of the 2019 Bennetts British Superbike Championship in race two at Thruxton.
'Hicky' showed strong stride all weekend and qualified on the front row, converting that pace in to a strong fifth identify terminate in race one, collecting his first podium of the twelvemonth after a hard-fought battle with Andrew Irwin in race 2.
Consistency is key in the Bennetts British Superbike Championship and the Smiths Racing man proves that, past finishing every race this flavour in the points he now sits merely sixteen points shy of Andrew Irwin in 6th.
Only fifty-fifty afterward the joy of his showtime podium of the year onboard the all-new BMW S1000RR, Hickman admitted to BikeSocial after the weekend that it wasn't the best of rounds for him.
"Information technology wasn't a mega weekend, but information technology was platonic. The end in race one was shut simply no cigar, I got bolted to another rider correct towards the end and it made me lose the gap to the front group, which was where the podium was.
"I felt similar I saved my tyre plenty, merely and then I had to use information technology to get dorsum to them only I only got at that place past the last lap, and by then it was all a scrap too late.
"That's just the way racing goes though, so I finished fifth.

"Then race ii was hard fought eventually, especially information technology being a shortened race, everyone is on the ball.
"Getting a podium is good but we're just defective some speed, if I could become some more equus caballus power we'd have been at least second, whether we could compete with Brookes or non is a completely different question.
"The Smiths Racing BMW squad did a fantastic job all weekend anyway, and information technology'due south great to get BMW'southward first podium in BSB on the new S1000RR."
Tyre life was the effect on anybody's minds, with some teams doing over 3 race simulations in exercise and warm-up to understand how their bikes would perform under racing conditions.
But Hickman knew heading to Thruxton that his riding style and knowledge of the abrasive surface would play in to his hands.
And afterwards he explained that he, and his BMW, inappreciably ever struggles with tyre vesture issues, allowing the fastest human around the Isle of man TT form to focus fully on the set-up of his motorcar.
Only the starting time race saw Hicky struggle towards the cease of the race after he dropped back in the pack.

"It'southward something I've never actually struggled with, even here I've got the lines that I want to run and I kind of understand where I need to exist, and roughly what lap fourth dimension will become to the stop of the race on the soft tyre, and we were pretty good.
"Race ane was not as good as I might accept hoped, only I recall the temperature had gone upwards quite a lot on the track and nosotros always seem to struggle when the temperature is up.
"In the afternoon's race nosotros were a lot faster direct away and then who knows how it would have run if information technology panned out the way it was going, but information technology got cherry flagged.
"That's the way it goes, it's racing and we just motility onto Cadwell now and hopefully motion into the Showdown soon."
The second race was a cluttered thing, after 2 ruddy flags the race finally ran information technology class over just eight-laps in club to finish the days racing earlier the half-dozen:30pm curfew that Thruxton imposes.
After Brookes had shot off at the front from pole position, Hickman and Andrew Irwin battled it out on track for second best, with Irwin putting some hard moves on the Lincolnshire man.
Irwin most took 'Hicky' out of the race with a tough move, but the 32-twelvemonth-onetime rapidly barged his way back past, flicking two fingers up at the Honda Racing human as he flew past.
In a higher place: Tyre wear was the talk of the paddock all weekend
And 'Hicky' told his version of events to BikeSocial, expressing his badgerer at the force of Irwin's manoeuvre.
"Nudging is i matter, only he actually took my bars out my hand then that isn't a nudge," Hickman said.
"I'm sure he volition probably run into it completely differently, I felt similar I had put myself in a position where he could actually see me for the start, and I'd closed the line enough that he shouldn't really have come the inside of me, simply because he got some speed he decided to come through anyway.
"Nosotros were nevertheless on the bike though, I didn't go downward. At the next corner I made sure I got past him and let him know that I wasn't happy about it and that's the mode it goes!
Hickman then joked that taking one hand off the machine at one of the fastest parts of the Thruxton rail. He said: "It's 140 mile an hour or so isn't it, it's alright!"
The tall Lincolnshire man's attentions at present plow dorsum to route racing and the world'south fastest route race, the Ulster Yard Prix.

But what are his thoughts ahead of this yr's eagerly anticipated meeting, well nosotros asked on Sunday but as he was most to leave Hampshire.
"Thoughts are I'm going to miss the boat as today has gone on likewise long!" laughed Hickman from his empty Smith Racing garage.
"Nosotros should exist alright, I'one thousand looking forward to the Ulster, we just demand the conditions.
"Information technology's all that always matters really at the Ulster. Looking forward to it though, it should be good for the BMW and the little Triumph likewise."
Luckily Peter did make his ferry over to Norther Ireland, meaning he will be ready to one time once again go head to head with his fiercest road racing rival, Dean Harrison.
